Six specs that decide whether a vinyl gate lasts.
Measure the opening, not the gate
A 10 ft driveway gate does not fit a 10 ft opening. You need 1.5–3 in of total hinge-and-latch gap plus post width. Order by opening size and let the fabricator size the leaves.
Gate posts get 36–42 in footings
Fence line posts go 24–30 in in Kansas City. Gate posts carry cantilevered load and frost movement, so they go 36 in minimum and 42 in on anything over 12 ft, with a wider bell at the bottom of the hole.
Steel or aluminum inserts are not optional
Vinyl alone flexes. Every gate frame rail and both hinge posts need a galvanized steel or aluminum insert. A gate built from hollow vinyl will sag inside two seasons — this is the single most common failure we get called out to fix.
Wind load on solid privacy leaves
A 6 ft x 12 ft solid vinyl double gate is a 72 sq ft sail. Kansas City gusts regularly hit 40–50 mph. That is why we spec heavier hinges, a center drop rod set in a ground sleeve, and cane bolts on both leaves.
Automation-ready means plan it now
If a gate opener is even a maybe, we sleeve conduit under the drive during install. Trenching a finished concrete driveway later costs more than the opener. Vinyl drive gates over 12 ft usually need a steel sub-frame for automation.
Self-closing hardware for pool gates
Any vinyl gate in a pool enclosure needs self-closing hinges, a self-latching latch at 54 in, and no climbable horizontals. That adds $200–$400 per gate over standard hardware and it is what the inspector checks.
