Vinyl fence panels: big-box price vs installed cost

If you've priced vinyl panels at Home Depot or Lowe's and the math looked too good, this page explains the gap. Panel prices, the DIY line items nobody adds up, and real installed totals by 100, 150, and 200 feet — from the Kodiak Fence Co. install crew in Kansas City.

Panel-by-panel: shelf price vs installed

Big-box prices are 2026 KC-metro shelf averages. Installed column is contractor-grade material, labor, and footings included.

ItemBig-box shelf priceKodiak installedWhat's different
6 ft privacy panel (thin-wall kit)$95 – $145 ea$210 – $290 ea installedBig-box kits are 0.080–0.100" wall. Ours are 0.135"+ with reinforced bottom rail.
4 ft picket panel$55 – $90 ea$130 – $185 ea installedPanels cover 6–8 ft of run each, so divide by run length, not panel count.
Line post + cap$22 – $38 eaincludedBig-box posts are often routed for one panel height only — no mixed-height runs.
Concrete (60 lb bag)$6 – $9 eaincludedYou need 2–3 bags per post at proper 36" depth. Most DIY buys 1.
Single walk gate kit$210 – $390$300 – $550 installedBox kits ship with zinc hardware that rust-streaks the panel within 2 winters.
Post hole digger / auger rental$80 – $190 / dayincludedKC clay usually needs a powered auger, not a hand digger.

Six things the panel price doesn't cover

We get called out to fix each of these. Honest read: DIY vinyl works on short, flat, gate-free runs. It fails on long runs, slopes, and privacy heights.

  • Wall thickness — a $95 panel is 0.080–0.100" vinyl. It goes brittle below freezing, and KC hits single digits most winters.
  • No steel-reinforced bottom rail — the #1 failure point. Unreinforced 6 ft privacy panels bow within 5–8 years.
  • Post depth — panels sit on posts set below the 30–36" KC frost line in concrete. Shallow posts heave and pull runs out of line every spring.
  • Grade changes — vinyl panels don't rack much. Sloped KC yards need stepped runs and custom-cut panels, which box kits don't allow.
  • Property line and permit — a fence set even 6 inches over the line is a survey-and-rebuild problem, not a warranty problem.
  • Warranty — a lifetime material warranty means nothing if the manufacturer voids it for improper installation, which is the standard clause.

When DIY panels make sense — and when they don't

Buy the panels yourself

  • Under 60 feet of flat, straight run
  • Picket or ranch-rail height, no privacy panels
  • No gates, or a simple 4 ft picket gate
  • You already own or can rent a powered auger
  • Decorative only — nothing containing a dog or pool

Hire the install

  • 6 ft privacy at any length — bottom-rail reinforcement matters
  • Any grade change or stepped run
  • Pool perimeter with self-closing, self-latching code gates
  • Double drive gates or anything over 8 feet wide
  • You want the manufacturer warranty to actually hold
