Detailed
Pros and cons of each.
Wood (Western Red Cedar)
Pros
- Lowest up-front cost of the three privacy options
- Warm, natural look that ages beautifully
- Easy to repair board-by-board
- Holds up well to KC humidity when properly stained
Cons
- Wants stain every 3–5 years
- Boards can warp or split over time
- Shorter lifespan than vinyl or aluminum
Vinyl
Pros
- Near-zero maintenance for the life of the fence
- Lifetime material warranty
- Won't rot, warp, splinter, or need stain
- Color is consistent and uniform
Cons
- Highest up-front cost
- Can crack in cold-weather impacts if you buy cheap vinyl (we only sell heavy-wall)
- Hard to repair invisibly — usually replace the panel
Aluminum Ornamental
Pros
- Maintenance-free — won't rust through KC freeze-thaw
- Best resale value for the look it provides
- HOA-friendly across most KC subdivisions
- Excellent for pool enclosures (meets pool code when built to spec)
Cons
- Provides no privacy or wind block
- Not suitable as a sole pet containment for small dogs
- Custom welded styles can run well above the standard range
Our take
Which one should you actually pick?
Pick wood if…
You want the classic look, you're working an older KC neighborhood, you don't mind a weekend of staining every few years, and you'd rather spend less today than less over 30 years.
Pick vinyl if…
You want a privacy fence you genuinely never have to think about, you're staying in the house long-term, and you live in a newer subdivision where vinyl is already the look.
Pick aluminum if…
You don't need full privacy, you want a clean ornamental look, you're in an HOA-governed neighborhood, or you're enclosing a pool. Best-aging material we install.
The combination move: a lot of our Overland Park, Leawood, and Lee's Summit customers do aluminum in the front yard (HOA-friendly, view-preserving, satisfies the under-4 ft front-yard rule) and cedar or vinyl in the back. Best of both worlds.
