How Much Does a Fence Cost in Kansas City? (2026 Pricing Guide)

We quote dozens of fence projects across the Kansas City metro every month, so the ranges below reflect what we and other reputable KC contractors are actually charging in 2026 — not national averages pulled from a directory site.

The short version (installed, per linear foot):

4 ft chain link — $18 to $28/lf. Cheapest option. Galvanized at the low end, black vinyl-coated at the top.

6 ft chain link, black vinyl-coated — $28 to $42/lf. The go-to for dog runs and commercial perimeters.

6 ft cedar privacy — $42 to $65/lf. Western Red Cedar with steel posts and a kicker board lands near the top of this range and lasts the longest.

6 ft vinyl privacy — $55 to $85/lf. Heavy-wall vinyl, not the box-store stuff. Lifetime material warranty, near-zero maintenance.

Black aluminum ornamental — $48 to $80/lf. 4 ft to 6 ft, residential grade. Pool code and welded styles run higher.

Wrought-iron / welded ornamental — $90 to $150/lf+. Custom finials, stone-pillar integration, mitered cap rails.

Farm / woven wire (5 ft) — $8 to $14/lf. High-tensile and barbed are similar.

Custom gates — driveway gates with hardware $1,800 to $6,500+; walk gates $300 to $900.

What pushes a Kansas City fence price up:

- Terrain. Heavy clay, rock, or steep slope adds digging time. Posts still need to hit 36 inches. - Removal. Tearing out an old fence is typically $4 to $8/lf depending on what's there. - Permits. KCMO, Overland Park, Olathe, Lee's Summit, and Leawood all require permits over 4 ft — usually $50 to $200, sometimes built into the quote. - HOA submittals. Free, but they delay the start by a week or two and occasionally force a material change. - Steel posts vs wood posts. A cedar fence with steel posts costs 15 to 25% more up front and lasts roughly twice as long. - Access. If we can't get a skid steer to the back yard, post setting is hand work — that's a real cost.

What keeps the price down:

- Straight runs without corners or gates. - Existing flat, accessible yard with no removal. - Standard material choices (6 ft cedar, 4 ft black aluminum, 6 ft black-coated chain link). - Booking in winter (Nov–Feb). KC contractors are hungry that time of year.

Why on-site quotes beat phone quotes.

Anyone who gives you a per-foot price over the phone without seeing your yard is guessing. Slope, soil, access, removal, and how the posts hit existing utilities all move the number. Every Kodiak quote is on-site, itemized, and the number you see is the number you pay.

Ballpark a typical KC backyard.

For a standard 150-foot backyard 6 ft privacy fence with one walk gate, expect:

- Cedar with steel posts: roughly $7,500 to $10,500 installed - Heavy-wall vinyl: roughly $9,000 to $13,500 installed - Black aluminum ornamental: roughly $8,000 to $12,500 installed

These are real KC numbers in 2026, not lowball lead-bait pricing. If you're getting quotes thousands below this range, ask hard questions about post depth, post material, hardware, and warranty — that's almost always where corners are getting cut.
