Wood Fence Labor Cost Per Foot: What You're Actually Paying For

By Jake Champion — Owner, Kodiak Fence Co.

Labor on a wood fence in the Kansas City metro runs $14 to $28 per linear foot, or roughly 35% to 45% of the installed price. Materials are the rest, plus permits, disposal, and overhead.

Most cost articles only give you the all-in per-foot number. Here's the split, because it's the fastest way to tell a real bid from a bid that's about to cut corners.

Labor cost per foot by fence type (installed, KC metro 2026)

| Fence | Installed price | Labor share | Labor per foot | |---|---|---|---| | 4 ft picket, treated pine | $28–$42/lf | ~38% | $11–$16/lf | | 6 ft privacy, treated pine | $34–$48/lf | ~38% | $13–$18/lf | | 6 ft cedar privacy, wood posts | $42–$58/lf | ~36% | $15–$21/lf | | 6 ft cedar privacy, steel posts | $52–$68/lf | ~40% | $21–$27/lf | | 8 ft cedar privacy | $62–$85/lf | ~42% | $26–$36/lf | | Board-on-board / shadowbox cedar | $52–$72/lf | ~42% | $22–$30/lf |

Steel-post builds carry a higher labor share because setting and aligning steel takes longer, not because the crew is padding it.

What's inside the labor line

On a 150-foot cedar privacy fence, the labor is:

  • Layout and utility locates — string lines, mark posts, wait on 811. Half a day before anything gets built.
  • Digging — 20+ holes at 36 inches through KC clay, sometimes rock. Hand-dig anywhere an auger can't reach.
  • Setting posts — plumb, on-line, correct height on a slope, concrete mixed and poured.
  • Cure time — a return trip the next day on most jobs.
  • Framing and pickets — rails, kicker board, picket spacing, cap rail.
  • Gates — the highest-labor part of any fence. A gate that doesn't sag over five years is skill, not hardware.
  • Cleanup and haul-off — spoils from 20 holes is a real pile of clay.

Where a cheap bid finds the savings

If a bid comes in 30% under the ranges above, the savings almost always come out of labor:

  • Post depth cut from 36 inches to 24. Invisible on day one. Heaves within three winters.
  • No concrete, or dry-pack instead of mixed concrete.
  • No gravel at the base of the post.
  • Wider post spacing — 10 ft instead of 8 ft means fewer holes and a wobblier fence.
  • Screwing pickets straight to posts with no proper rail structure.
  • No cure day — pickets hung on posts that haven't set.

Ask any low bidder to put post depth, post spacing, and footing spec in writing. Most won't.

DIY math

Material only for a 150 ft 6 ft cedar privacy fence runs roughly $3,800–$6,000 in KC. Pro install adds $2,200–$4,000 in labor. So DIY saves real money — but you're renting an auger, moving a ton of concrete, and eating the mistakes. Post holes are unforgiving once concrete cures.
