The short answer: chain link is cheaper up front (by roughly 2x), faster to install, and almost zero maintenance. Wood costs more, looks better, gives full privacy, and adds more resale value when it's well-built and well-kept.

Lifespan in Kansas City weather. Galvanized chain link lasts 20–30 years before the coating dulls and links loosen. Black vinyl-coated chain link lasts 25–40.
