Solid vinyl, white aluminum, and modern board-on-board are usually denied; cedar dog-ear stained in approved earth tones, and wrought-iron-style aluminum in black, are typically what passes. We pull the overlay map before quoting and submit photos with the permit so you don't sink a deposit on a spec the city will reject.
Independence sits on the Eastside clay belt. The topsoil drains slowly and the clay holds water against the post, which is the real reason untreated 4×4 cedar posts rot at the grade line in 8–10 years here — not in 20 like west-side JoCo installs. The fix is steel posts (or full concrete crowning that sheds water away from the post), and on storm-prone runs we strongly recommend the steel upgrade. Straight-line winds out of the west routinely take down standard cedar posts on Eastside lots; steel doesn't snap.
